A Call to Men

August 28, 2014

At Blackburn Center, we are actively seeking ways to get men involved in our mission of ending gender violence.  We believe that by working with men, we can help to build new models of masculinity and manhood which reject gender violence and help to build respect for women.  We invite the men of Westmoreland County and beyond to educate themselves about how to stop violence — not only by refusing to participate, but by challenging other men who do participate in it and by challenging ideals and attitudes that support violence against women.

There are many ways that men can get involved in our mission, from Walking a Mile in Her Shoes to Taking the Pledge to donating to our organization, or volunteering at Blackburn Center. Men can also support our efforts to end domestic and sexual violence by simply learning more about these issues — and about how they can play a part in ending gender violence.

Because we believe that education is one of the keys to ending gender violence, we are excited to share that in September, author Tony Porter will be speaking to an audience in Pittsburgh about how to create a world where all men and boys are loving and respectful, and all women and girls are valued and safe.  This event, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV — link) with support from FISA Foundation and The Heinz Endowments, is sure to be an incredible learning opportunity.  Please mark your calendars for this fantastic (and free!) chance to attend A CALL TO MEN: A CALL TO ACTION on September 11, 2014.  Click to register or to learn more.
