Why We Are Standing Together to End Violence

September 14, 2016

At Blackburn Center, we have been providing services to victims of domestic and sexual violence in Westmoreland County since 1976.  Over the past 40 years, our mission has primarily stayed the same – but our focus has evolved.  In 2002, we recommitted to the part of our mission dedicated to actively working to end gender violence in our community.  Our commitment to social transformation can be seen in our innovative partnerships with local universities, our Coaching Boys into Men program, our Men As Allies group, and our ongoing work to educate and train students, professionals and volunteers throughout Westmoreland County.

As we’ve seen the prevalence of other types of crime in our communities grow, we have come to realize that the expertise and skills we’ve developed over four decades of service to victims of gender-based violence in Westmoreland County could be put to good use for victims of all types of crime.  Blackburn Center’s expertise in trauma-informed services can – and will – benefit victims of any type of violence or crime.

That is why we decided as an agency that it was time to update our logo, to truly reflect the work that we do and the services that we provide.  At Blackburn Center, we are standing together to end violence

Of course, we remain dedicated to the cause of ending domestic and sexual violence in our community and beyond.  We will continue to provide services to women, children and men who have suffered these types of abuse.  But at the same time, we are broadening our scope and letting the world know that we are taking a stand against ALL violence.

If you have been affected by violence or by any type of crime, please know that we are here for you.  We provide a broad range of services to victims.  We also provide a number of services to our Westmoreland County community, including education and training programs for schools, businesses, religious institutions, organizations and more.  We will continue our work to end violence through primary prevention efforts, and to raise awareness about these issues.

We are proud to introduce our new logo to you, and we hope that you are as excited as we are about the changes we are making.  If you’d like to stand with us, you can get involved by volunteering, donating, or joining one of our great groups, Men As Allies or Future Advocates of Blackburn (FAB).

Let’s take a stand to end violence in Westmoreland County — together!
