How You Can Support Our Critical Work in Westmoreland County

#OneDay is Aug. 5. Visit www.PittsburghGives.org to donate.

On August 5, 2025, The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County will host the #OneDay Critical Needs Alert – a special day of giving designed to support nonprofits serving vulnerable populations throughout Allegheny and Westmoreland County communities.

This is a powerful opportunity to maximize your impact by donating to local organizations like Blackburn Center. #OneDay was designed to support more than 200 nonprofits that serve vulnerable populations in Western Pennsylvania. With additional incentive funds provided by The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, your donation on this day will go even further in supporting our mission.

What Needs Does #OneDay Address?

#OneDay focuses on five critical areas of human services: childcare, employment, food and nutrition, eviction prevention and housing, and physical and mental health. These needs represent some of the most pressing challenges facing individuals and families in our region.

At Blackburn Center, we directly contribute to this work by addressing the urgent needs of survivors and victims of Intimate Partner Violence through safe housing.

We provide:

  • Emergency shelter for survivors and victims of Intimate Partner Violence, offering safety and support during times of crisis.

This service is part of Blackburn Center’s broader efforts to support survivors and victims in Westmoreland County, helping to ensure safety and stability when they need it most. Other services offered by Blackburn Center include: 24-hour hotline for crisis counseling and referrals, counseling and therapy, support groups, support during emergency room visits and legal proceedings specific to type of victimization, community education program, student awareness programs, and in-service trainings for professionals.

Why Your Support on #OneDay Matters

In recent years, many nonprofit organizations – particularly those supporting survivors and victims of gender-based violence – have faced growing challenges due to fluctuating federal funding. Much of the funding for these services comes from federal programs such as:

  • The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)

  • The Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA)

  • The Victims of Crime Act (VOCA)

Many of these programs depend on congressional appropriations or are subject to broader federal budget constraints. That makes community giving more essential than ever. This reality means that organizations like Blackburn Center need to rely more heavily on donations from community members and businesses for local support to ensure we can continue offering the high-quality, trauma-informed services we’ve offered for more than 40 years.

How #OneDay Works

Giving is simple:

  • On August 5, visit the designated #OneDay platform to search for qualifying organizations

  • Select Blackburn Center as your nonprofit of choice

  • Make your donation (you’ll also have the option to cover the small processing fee so 100% of your gift supports our work)

All donations made on this day are eligible for a share of $50,000 in incentive funds provided by The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County. These funds are prorated based on how much each organization raises – meaning your donation helps us unlock a larger portion of those funds.

Unlike matching funds, incentive funds don’t “run out,” which means every dollar you give helps increase our share – no matter when you give on August 5.

How You Can Help on #OneDay and Beyond

We know this is a time of financial uncertainty for many. If you’re able to make a gift during #OneDay, it’s one of the most impactful ways to support our work.

If a financial donation isn’t possible right now, sharing our campaign donation link with friends, family, and coworkers is just as valuable. Helping us spread the word can directly lead to more support and, ultimately, more services for those who need them.

As always, we’re here if you need us. Our hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-888-832-2272 (TDD available). All calls to our hotline are free of charge and can be anonymous.
